Sunny summer days allow you to spend plenty of time outside in your garden. Whether you’re playing with the kids or hosting a barbecue for friends, increased foot traffic on your lawn will damage delicate blades. This, combined with the hot weather and strong sun, can leave grass damaged. Follow these lawn maintenance tips to avoid brown spots.

3 Lawn Maintenance Tips for Summer

1. Water Regularly

Different types of grass require different amounts of water. One inch of water per week is a good rule of thumb. Water early in the morning, ideally around 6:00 a.m. or else the moisture will evaporate too rapidly in the sun. Don’t water at night; the moisture will sit too long and allow mold to grow.

2. Don’t Cut the Lawn Too Short

Set your mower blades high so grass isn’t cut below three inches. Longer blades allow for a deeper, denser root network to grow. This makes the grass stronger and more capable of fighting off diseases and pests. Taller blades also create shade, keeping roots cool and moist on a hot summer day.

3. Feed the Grass

Warmer temperatures allow microbes to flourish in the dirt. It only takes about six to eight weeks for them to process nutrients in the soil of your lawn. Apply fertilizer at least every two months to counteract this nutrition drain. You can also get a mulching mower that processes nutrient-rich grass clippings back into the soil.

Getting up at six in the morning to water the lawn probably isn’t the most relaxing way to spend your summer. Mulching is beneficial for both garden beds and lawns. Mulch is an organic material that is spread over the soil surface to improve its quality. It can be made of bark, leaves, grass clippings, or other natural materials. Here are a few reasons why lawns need mulch.
