However, a few lawn maintenance practices will go a long way in stopping this grass killer.

How to Prevent Brown Patches on Your Lawn

1. Follow Proper Watering Guidelines

Moisture is one of the biggest contributors to brown patch fungus growth. Because of this, homeowners should water their lawn in the early morning, rather than late in the evening. Watering in the evening allows moisture to remain in place overnight during humid conditions, creating ideal circumstances for the fungus to thrive.


2. Apply Fungicide & Fertilizer

May through September are generally the prime months for brown patch fungus growth. Fungicides should be applied to the lawn during this period to limit growth. You should also apply moderate amounts of fertilizer that will strengthen your grass. Avoid high-release nitrogen fertilizers, as they could increase the risk for fungus growth. Overseeding with disease-resistant fescue can also strengthen your lawn.


3. Mow Regularly

Mowing your lawn regularly doesn’t just keep your yard looking maintained. Mowing with sharp blades will ensure that grass blades are getting enough airflow, which is essential for reducing excess moisture. Dry grass is less likely to experience a fungal infection. Never remove more than one-third of the grass’s height to keep it strong.
