While smaller backyards may have less space to work with than larger properties, it’s still possible to enhance a scaled-down outdoor space with functional, charming additions. Hardscaping elements, in particular, can add appeal and make an area more inviting. From water features to patios, here are some ideas that work well in tighter spaces.

A Guide to Hardscape Features for Small Properties

1. A Small Patio

You don’t have to have a sprawling lawn to add a backyard patio. All you need is enough area to accommodate a small table and chairs—or even a bench. While you could build one right off your home, also consider a “patio island” in your yard. Consider raising it to create visual depth.

2. Raised Flower Beds

Small yards may not have the space for a large flower garden, but you can create raised beds throughout key areas of the space instead of one large plot. This will also break up the yard and add visually appealing textures. You can also use potted plants if raised beds seem too overwhelming.

3. Water Features

If your space doesn’t allow for a pond, try a smaller water feature instead. These elements bring soothing sounds to your space, thanks to the gentle hum of running water. Fountains and bird baths come in a variety of sizes, so you’re sure to find one suited for your yard.

4. Vertical Decor

While you should avoid fencing off sections of the yard to prevent it from looking too closed in, you can still incorporate vertical decor elements to draw the eye upward. Set up a trellis for climbing plants like roses and hydrangeas for a stunning impact, for example.

5 Well-Placed Lighting

Lighting can either expand a space or make it look smaller. To create the illusion of added space in the evening, add depth by placing small garden lights along the pathways. Incorporate a few upward-facing sconces on the home or other key architectural features to attract the eye. However, don’t overdo it, as too much lighting at night can be off-putting.

Mulching is beneficial for both garden beds and lawns. Mulch is an organic material that is spread over the soil surface to improve its quality. It can be made of bark, leaves, grass clippings, or other natural materials. Here are a few reasons why lawns need mulch.
