Enjoying a beautiful green lawn does not always mean adding seeds to the soil and waiting for it to grow. Sod provides an instant alternative that can be used on residential and commercial properties. Learn more about this lawn product in the following guide, including the advantages it offers.

What Is Sod?

Sod is also known as turf and contains both grass and soil. Root systems hold it together, although thin biodegradable materials can also be used. This lawn product is grown, cut out of the ground in sheets, and rolled up for transportation. It's unrolled on bare residential or commercial ground in the desired location. Proper watering will help the root systems grow into the ground, subsequently creating a full, healthy lawn.

Numerous types of grass are used to create turf, including cool-season varieties like rye, Kentucky bluegrass, and fescue. Common warm-season grass varieties include centipede, zoysia, Bermuda, and St. Augustine.

What Are the Benefits of Laying Sod?

In addition to providing you with an instant lawn, turf requires about two waterings per day after planting. This is much easier compared to a seeded lawn that requires four waterings per day during the initial growth stages. Since sod takes root easily and does not require intense hydration, you’ll save money, time, and hassle. It's also almost impossible to overwater fresh sod.

Sod installation also provides you with a dense lawn that lacks bare spots and improved erosion control. Rainwater has a challenging time washing turf away, unlike seeds that often end up in gutters and storm drains. When bodies of water have high sediment content, it causes levels to rise and trigger a flood. Preventing soil erosion not only avoids expensive replacements but also helps keep nearby waterways from flooding during storms.

There are also fewer weeds to pull since the turf’s density prevents invasive seeds from sprouting. As a result, it's a low-maintenance way to enjoy a beautiful lawn.
