A man-made pond can lend beauty to your backyard and make the space feel more tranquil. Once a landscaping contractor installs this water feature, you might wonder how to keep it in good condition. Here are a few tips to follow to help care for your pond.

4 Maintenance Tips for Backyard Ponds

1. Use a Pond Vacuum

Dirt, leafy debris, and animal droppings may gradually accumulate in your garden pond, causing the water to become discolored, murky, and smelly. A pond vacuum is a device that has a handheld attachment, long hose, and chamber. It uses suction to remove dirt, sludge, and decaying organic matter, making it quick and easy to clean your oasis.

You may also need to deep-clean your pond once or twice annually. You can do this by draining the water feature and then using a brush to scrub the liner and edging materials before refilling it with fresh fluid.

2. Control Algae

A small amount of algae is beneficial, as these aquatic plants clean pond water and provide food for marine life. However, if it grows out of control, it may make your pond water cloudy and prevent you from seeing fish. Algae might also smother pond plants and clog your pump. Adding lilies to the water can block sunlight, preventing algae from completing photosynthesis and reproducing. Alternatively, you might treat the oasis with algaecide, which contains copper-based compounds that can kill algae and keep it from regrowing.

3. Add Water When Necessary

Over time, pond water may gradually evaporate as a result of exposure to heat energy from sunlight. As the fluid levels start to drop, marine life and aquatic plants might not get enough oxygen for survival. You can use your garden hose to replenish water when the level drops more than about an inch or two. You might consider using a water supply system to refill your pond. These devices use a fill valve and filter to eliminate impurities that can encourage algae to grow.

4. Maintain the Filter

Pond filters typically consist of stainless steel mesh and polypropylene. A pump moves water through the filter, allowing the latter to trap and remove debris, algae, and contaminants. Over time, the filter will gradually become saturated, preventing fluids from flowing through it. Cleansing the filter once or twice annually may ensure the device effectively purifies water. You'll find it in a container or basket located along the edge of your oasis. Carefully remove the filter, and use a garden hose to wash away debris before replacing it. It's best to replace it every two years to keep your pond water clean.
